I have been a competitive gamer for years and gaming was never a culture for me. It was just a habit woven into my daily routine after school: queueing for ranked matches, talking trash with friends, and eventually logging off for the night. Terms like “GG,” “cracked,” “meta,” “bot,” and “NPC” slipped naturally into everyday conversations with friends. But until I started this project, I never took the time to consider how unusual my vocabulary would seem to anyone who isn’t involved in gaming. When I wrote down all the slang I used in one night of gaming, the list was longer than I expected.

“Bot” was the most frequently used term on my list. It describes someone playing poorly or predictably, like a computer-generated player. It’s more like a reflex, whether joking with friends or expressing frustration in the moment. Repeated so often, it loses its impact and blends into normal game conversation.
“Smurfing” is common in FPS games like Valorant, Counter-Strike, and Rainbow Six Siege. A smurf is a highly skilled player who creates a new account to play against lower-ranked beginners. It makes the game frustrating for new players who are trying to learn and it exposes problems in the ranked system.

“AFK” stands for “Away From Keyboard,” meaning the player is currently inactive or temporarily away. This frustrates every gamer because it puts the entire team at a major disadvantage. Sometimes it’s due to an emergency, but more often it’s a tilted player giving up.
The list does not stop there. Here are a few more gamer slangs, explained simply.
| GG | Good game. Usually typed in the end of a match to be polite. |
| FF | Forfeit. Surrendering the match early because your team is losing badly. |
| Cracked | Insanely skilled player. Opposite of bot. |
| NT | Nice try. Used to acknowledge a player’s effort even if it wasn’t succesful. |
| BRB | Be right back. Gamers type it before going to the bathroom or grabbing a drink or food. Polite version of AFK. |
| DC | Disconnected. A player left the game due to bad connection or internet. |
| Meta | Most effective tactic available. Meta is the winning strategy of the moment. |
| Locked In | Locked in means you’re fully focused and ready to win. |
GG for now.
